Spoke with Chris Smith, the county attorney, recently. Said he hadn't decided yet whether to run for re-election. He's had quite a term with the Thurber case. Smith was pretty tough when he challenged Jim Spring four years ago. I wonder if the job has meet his expectations and viceversa. Here's a quote from a Traveler story on Oct. 25, 2005 on Smith referring to Spring.
"My opponent's poor track record with the filing, prosecution, and resolution of cases during his four years as county attorney speaks volumes in regard to his lack of motivation and dedication to the citizens of our community, and in regard to the quality of his experience, "Smith said.

My bet is that he had good intentions going in, but found that our legal system required just what he saw as weakness by the former prosecutor, ie, the plea bargaining of so many cases, and so many light or suspended sentences.
Our legal system is faulty, plain and simple. Until it is fixed from the top, there probably isn't much our locals can do to make it better.
Maybe he just found out that the D.A. does not run his job on his thoughts and ideals around but he is told more often by the stimulus of our ability to house those who who offend the law by the budget he has to deal with.
Our economy is weak and the power to prosecute offenders has a lot to do with the budget you have to work with not simply your own visionary outlooks of what should be done.
And the way things look the jungle in which you live is going to get worse
If he screws up the Jodi Sanderholm trial, he won't need to decide whether or not to run again.
