'round we go

I've heard a lot of people grumble or complain about the round-a-about coming in on Kansas and bypass. I think people are pretty uncertain how they work, but once you drive around them a couple times, they seem to work nicely and they do slow people down. The city has been showing a KDOT video to people to explain them.

I was unsure about them handling a tractor-trailer, but I followed one through one over by Baxter Springs, and the rig just went around it like normal, other than he took up both lanes in the round-about. You just have to slow down to go through it, from 65 to 45. I would be concerned about extra-long trailers, like the ones they haul wind-farm blades on, but don't they go down Summit anyway?

David Allen thinks its like a merry-go-round....weeee for DA and the Traveler!

Are you kidding? Most of the drivers around here never figured out that a 2-way stop is different than a 4-way stop. They will never be able to figure out a roundabout.

Mountains come out of the sky, and they stand there.

I think this would be a great opportunity to run a few articles on proper driving behavior. I think one of the other bloggers is correct. A lot of people do not know what is appropriate at a 2 way stop, or a 4 way stop. Concerning a 2 way stop, my husband and I constantly debate, which driver goes first. The one who approached the stop sign first? Or the one who is going straight and not turning left in front of the other driver? What is followed commonly and what is legal, may be two different things. I would love to see some driving and general vehicle safety articles published in cooperation with the Traveler and the ACPD.

I've also wondered, what is the legal age to leave a child in a car when he/she does not want to go into the store with his/her parent? I'm only referring to children who are old enough to exit the vehicle if they get too hot, or roll down the window, etc. I am NOT asking about infants and toddlers, that is a completely different issue.

It's ALWAYS the vehicle going straight. I was cut off the other day by a postal worker who did not know how the 2-way works. He was , shall we say, demonstratively p.o'ed. If you decide it's your "turn" and cut someone off, you are in the wrong and liable for anything that results. And at those intersections, that can and has meant death.

Hey David Allen, if they start this this week, what does that do to the prairiefest art festival down town in a couple weeks? Could they still close summit for the art? I ask because I know you are involved with the art board.
Thanks!
