Free exercise thereof

Thankfully the president has finally spoken out on this issue issue. I understand the controversy and the concern of some people, especially some 9-11 victim families. However, that does not trump our constitution, and the end conclusion seems pretty simple — of course they have a right to build a center of worship for Muslims. Not only that, the site is not at ground zero and it will be a community center with a worship space, not a giant mosque with spirals and all.

I'll bet that George Bush, if still president, would support this. He did an excellent job, at least just after 9-11, of calling for tolerance and respect of Muslims and their religion.

The more you read about the people behind it, and the and more context you get, the more it seems this is being driven by fear and tribalism - the exact thing we are fighting against in terrorism.

Here's the first part of the first amendment to the constitution. It kind of bring some clarity.

CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF ...

Yes they have the right to worship whatever religion they want. However don't you find it a bit weird of WHERE they want to build their new mosque?

Now i see where people in his own party are turning against him on the issue. Would you write about that please???

Those arguing against the proposed Muslim center need to think carefully about the issue. Not only are there constitutional issues but do they REALLY want to establish a precedent restricting the right of a religious organization to build on land they own? They don't want to be too myopic, they might just get what they ask for.

I think I have a way to bring this into a context that many around here can relate to.

While the first amendment does indeed give this Iman (however you spell it, I don't feel like looking it up) the RIGHT to build a Mosque anywhere he chooses, that does not make it the right thing to do.

The same first amendment that guarantees his RIGHT to build a mosque at ground zero also gives Fred Phelps and his merry band of inbred idiots the RIGHT to spew their vile crap at the funerals of the brave men and women who are dying to protect those rights.

JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING CAN BE DONE, DOES NOT MEAN IT SHOULD BE DONE.

Both of these men are hiding behind the first amendment to cause pain and suffering to people. Phelps to the families and friends of fallen soldiers, and the Iman to the families and friends of those who died on 9/11. Neither of them seem to want to step back and see the hurt they cause. Maybe that is their intent. With Phelps, at least, that seems to be the case. The motives of the Iman are less clear. But the fact that neither man, both of whom claim religion as their calling, seems to care about the people they are hurting speaks volumes.

In my opinion it would not prohibit the free exercise of his religion to have hiim build a few more blocks away from the spot where his fellow religious brothers killed three thousand innocent Americans.

Islam is known as the religion of the sword for a good reason.

Why was the name changed from the Cordoba project ? Maybe you want to read up on your 7th century history, starting with Spain.

Islam means submission.

No one will build this bad idea. They should pick another site.
