City of calm

Compared to the turmoil in Ark City government right now, this story from Winfield stands in stark contrast.

Warren Porter is making a Curt Freeland-type run for longevity there. His bosses announced they are happy with him and he turned down a raise offer, they said.

I think Warren Porter is probably as close to a straight shooter as it comes - when indentifying the role of City Government.
When they tried to propose a TIF in Winfield - he said No TIFS!
There was no further discussion or need to split the citizenry.
I think he is open to suggestions and is always looking out for the best interest of that City.
He supports the efforts of the Private Sector and he defines the responsibilities of the Public sector as those two Sectors relate to each other!
Two of Winfield's biggest assets is their Municipal Utility Business and Warren Porter!

Winfield and the even the County Adminstrator are not trying to hid under the table deals. They are upfront have nothing to hid from the commissioners.

A stark contrast to Arkansas City where this adminstration had everything to hid. Did in fact hid deals, and do under the table contracts for friends.

You mentioned that the Winfield city manager turned down a raise.

You failed to mention that the County Administrator Alsup did the exact same thing.

Folks, the entire Winfield city dynamic is different. They don't go to their commission meetings to accuse their commission. Instead they read these blogs for entertainment.

It isn't so much that Warren is a superhero or something. Warren cares about what his colleagues think concerning his professionalism. Winfield is busy doing things like promoting the city as a top 100 small cities in the USA. They build projects and then present them before national organizations for recognition as a source of community pride.

So while we were bullying our citizens and shaking them down for $100 a pop for being five days late paying their water bill, Winfield built the sports complex we fueded about for the past ten years, Winfield built the new aquatics center that we griped about for five years until it was scaled down to insignificant and Winfield went aggressivel after a new employer to replace a lost one while we wree busy cussing the packing plant for bringing in Mexicans.

There simply is no reason to compare Warren Porter to what we have happening in City Hall or Winfield to Ark City.

The only thing we have in common is Cowley County and the owners of the newspapers.
