Gun safety

Is this story a case of careless kids or a general cavalier attitude toward guns?

Sounds like a simple accident. There is nothing in the article to show that the teens were being negligent or "cavalier". I think you lefties just hate guns, and look for anything bad that happens with them. If a kid dropped a knife and it stuck in his big toe, would that get the same attention? What about dropping a hammer off a ladder onto someone's head? A gun is simply a tool. One that should be treated with respect and caution, much like a nail gun or saw. Guns don't jump up and shoot people without help. Blaming a gun for a crime, or an accidental discharge, is like blaming Rosie O'donnel's fork because she is fat.

OK, Gun folks I have a question for you. I grew up in a big city where guns were almost always a bad thing

So OK, I understand maybe you want a shotgun or two for your hunting, and maybe a handgun in case someone breaks into your house or something, but what do you need the assault weapons for?

Seriously I would like to know.

First of let's deal with the term "assault weapons". A so called "assault weapon" works exactly the same as your daddy's semi auto hunting rifle. The only difference is the appearance, and that fact that it has a pistol style grip (usually, but not always), and it holds more bullets. They are not machine guns that spray bullets when you hold the trigger. one round goes off with each trigger squeeze. In fact, your daddy's hunting rifle is probably of a higher caliber, and far deadlier at long range than most "assault weapons".

And to answer your question, most use them for shooting. It's as simple as that. For fun. Some do rely on them for self defense of their home and family (although it wouldn't be my choice for inside the home), and some keep them for the day when "TSHTF", as they like to say on the survivalist forums. Whether that be the Russians invading, ala "Red Dawn", the zombie apocalypse, or Obama's Private security force rounding up guns. Seriously though, what comes to my mind is an economic collapse, and the looting and crime that would surely follow. Do I really think that's going to happen? Probably not! Do I carry car insurance just in case I get in an accident? yes I do! Same thing.

I bet if George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had had access to "Assault Weapons", you can bet your butt they'd have used them.

You grew up in the city where guns are always a bad thing? Do you think no one in that big city kept a gun in the bedside drawer to protect themselves from the hoods outside who had guns? That gun in the drawer is a good thing. It equalized the playing field a little. It made the 70 year old man capable of standing up to the 20 something year old punks who would try to break in his home and hurt his family. Guns are never a bad thing in the hands of good people. What you left wingers don't get is that the bad guys will ALWAYS be able to get guns. You can't ban them completely, and if you do, bad guys will still get them. Drugs are illegal, yet all the druggies have them. Guns will be no different. All you will do by banning them is take them away from the law abiding citizens, and make us easy targets for the scumbags. The police can't stop criminals from breaking in your house and hurting you. They can mop up the mess afterwards, but they hardly ever get there in time to help. Good, law-abiding citizens have a right and a duty to protect themselves and their families from harm.

Yes you do have the right to protect yourself and your family. I am sure that is the excuse the guy from NY had when he bought his gun...then he shot 96 bullets in a minute and a half to kill the people in the immigation office!

It probably won't get your attention until it close to home!

You say 96 bullets in a minute like that's a lot. it's nothing compared to a truly automatic rifle like our men and women of the armed forces carry every day.

You still blame the gun for the actions of the person using it. There are always going to be crazy people who do bad things. I, for one, would like to be able to defend myself in case it DOES hit close to home. If you take the guns away, then we will all be helpless victims if that happens. Is that what you want? To live in fear for the day when someone breaks into your house and you are helpless to defend yourself?

Why don't we ban forks so the obesity problem will go away. That makes as much sense as banning guns.
