Open meetings

My story on the possible violation of open meetings laws by Ark City commissioner(s). This looks fairly innocent. I am glad to see the local prosecutor taking it seriously, though, to nip anything worse in the bud.

Course Mell is defiant and churlish as ever ....

David, did you have to look that word up? Come on. Who uses Churlish in normal conversation? Do you have a word of the day calendar on your desk?

churlish:
Pronunciation [chur-lish]

–adjective
1. like a churl; boorish; rude: churlish behavior.
2. of a churl; peasantlike.
3. niggardly; mean.
4. difficult to work or deal with, as soil.

number 3 made me giggle, considering who we're talking about.

KOMA and potential violations also have another component that was not mentioned. The law does not forbid them coming together in any session. It forbids them coming together without notice to the press and when/where they may discuss a potential agenda item.

If the matter never comes up on the agenda, there is no issue. That does not allow, by any means, for the group to come together nad effectively fillibuster a topic in a non-commission setting so that they might collude to keep it away from the agenda.

It does not truly appear that there is a KOMA violation here. However, cooperation and coordination might better serve public confidence. Perhaps, they should work on a trust level that allows one (or two under new KOMA law) to attend and report back to the governing body in a work session.

The target of KOMA is to allow the public to see the local government process with transparency. It was never intended to dictate interaction or socialization of council members through the course of their term.

Oh not sure if I mentioned, the other element to KOMA is notification of press or media sources. TRaveler is the official print media. KSOK I think is the official hot media. They do not have to attend but should be noticed if members of the governing body above KOMA allowances shall come together to discuss city matters that are or may become future agenda/voting matters.

Notice is a requirement. Attendance by the media is not.

I can't believe it took someone over 2 years to call the commission on it...I would be shocked if it was the first violation.

I love how our local newspaper is more than happy to run news about the city commission MAYBE doing something bad but yet to see a front page follow up on their drug buddies at KACY. Mel may always have harsh words but he's not doing drugs!

Dear, David Allen

It was nice to see you at the art festivity downtown on Saturday; to me, we had a warm and frank conversation. However since then your 101 blog has been brought to my attention thing look different. You shook my hand after posting that I am “Churlish” (met to be ugly).

This slur is puzzling, you call me “Defiant and Churlish”, and how can I be both? Defiant is the opposite of Churlish when churlish = boorish or vulgar.

I am not fearful of the county attorney finding anything out of order even after all the mudslinging; so the term “bring it on” is Defiant. Defiance is standing up to the Boorish who demand their own way nevertheless. It’s Churlish to continue to fan the flames after the facts have show there is nothing.

Therefore you must be insinuating that I am Churlish = Peasant like, I know that you’re the better and smarter one, I do manual labor and I’ m mostly self-educated like any other peasant. But it’s not about me; the real issue is that the government funded coalition against freedom of choice, don’t like opposition.

When presented with an opposing point of view and there stats are questioned the name calling and the behind the scene play begin.

So I will not trade insults because your rapier wit and big words would make me look even more peasant like. Plus you will always get the last word; after all you have the most ink.

To the anonymous poster from 6/3 at 9:25, claiming improprieties only during the last two years, you turn your blind eye knowing irregularities are going on now, and always have been is Churlish and Dishonest.

My experience tells me that Mell calls it like he sees it. That offends some people. Be that at it may, people often would prefer to snipe at Mell's style rather than accept the majority of what he is saying that is true and real. Sometimes the truth hurts and people would prefer not to listen. The thing that really bugs is that people keep trying throw mud with stones in it and it just won't stick and they keep bouncing off. There is no dirty laundry and that offends the same people who are offended by the truth and by Mell's style. I've said it before and will say it again, as Mr. Jim Lampley says, "styles make fights." Mell's take on the truth is almost always more accurate than what the paper puts out.

Neil Carter, you died from complacations brought on by type II diabetis not smoking. I know Mell and he has never said ‘secondhand smoke never hurt any one’, you made that up, shamy on you. He did say “this is about government funded coalition against freedom of choice”.

I love how so many people can find the time in their busy lives to constantly hammer my dad Mell Kuhn. I applaud him for sticking his neck out there to try and do what he thinks is best for this city. Unlike all the negative bloggers who for one won't put their name on here and two have probably never volunteered one minute of their precious blogging time to lift a finger to help anyone at all. Get off the computer and get some fresh air and help your friends (if you have any) do something constructive outdoors rather than be an arm chair quaterback or a back seat driver from the security of your anonomys status!

Oh and for all those that must know, my biological father and mother divorced when I was a toddler. Mell married my mother and has been my father ever since. This is why we have different last names!

How about a "who cares?" poll.
