Buffett on taxes

Warren Buffet sounds the horn again that the rich should pay more taxes. He doesn't buy the trickle-down theory of tax cuts for the wealthy raising all boats.

I think the reasonable thing to do on tax cuts would be to let them expire on the wealthiest now, to raise revenue to be put toward deficit reduction, and let them eventually expire on the rest of us, after growth gets back to full steam. This would be a serious effort toward deficit reduction and show real compromise - for Republicans who hate taxes, and for Democrats who shun deficit reduction (Republicans actually haven't been that big on it until recently)

Did it ever occur to a liberal like you that our tax system today is obsolete?

That its still based on a manufacturing society and not a service/consumer one?

But, we can't change because of all the institutions that are in place that would require being changed or even abolished?
(So instead we just keep them going and/or even make them BIGGER!)

You just can't see through you limited vision that the change we really need isn't Socialism!

Don't you think we are taxed enough already? How about if government stops spending money on stupid pet projects?

No pet projects? Define what they are please? We don't need socialism? First define what is socialism and then go on and explain what we do need, please?

Perhaps you are the candidate we need for 2012 election.

Oh, a government lover.

Surely government doesn't waste any taxpayer money.

It does waste money. And don't call me Shirley!
-------------
Here's a sample list of wasteful spending from the SO CALLED Stimulus package.

• $2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaking ship.

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD’s.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

• $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.

• $1 billion for the 2010 Census, which already has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.

• $75 million for “smoking cessation activities.”

• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.

• $75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.

• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.

• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into “green” buildings.

• $500 million for state and local fire stations.

• $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.

• $1.2 billion for “youth activities,” including youth summer job programs.

• $88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service.

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property.

• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

• $160 million for “paid volunteers” at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

• $5.5 million for “energy efficiency initiatives” at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

• $850 million for Amtrak.

• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.

• $75 million to construct a “security training” facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.

• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.

• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.

Is that enough for you, because there are plenty more where those came from. Facts are hard to argue with huh?

I don't agree that money for jobs for youth is wasteful.

I don't agree that money for the CDC is wasteful - lets see how much you holler next time there is a H1N1 or whatever that mosquito virus was or some other outbreak or even when your loved one contracts some viral infection and there is a need for a lab to analyze right away.

I don't agree that $500mm for flood control is wasteful considering that this tiny insignificant community topped several million in damage - prevent or remediate afterwards?

I don't agree that remediation for lead based paint is wasteful considering the health and fatal consequences of children exposed to lead based paint.

I don't agree that prevention of wildfires is wasteful when you consider the lives and property lost as a result of failure to control in the past.

It's easy to point and click about what government costs. I am so confident that you would be complaining about failure to act on the part of the government if any of these things went unattended.

I could go on but I know the fundamental truth is you don't want to pay for anything. Which makes you a closet welfare junkie.

"Keep us safe, build us roads, prevent from epidemic or pandemic outbreak, find the terrorist, make sure commercial flying is maintained at a safe standard and I don't want topay for any of it."

That's the theme of the closet welfare junkie.

Not sure I capture the worth of hidden recommendations.

Not sure I need your approval or reccomendation as you too are an Anonymous!

But we do live in interesting times - the Republicans are being influenced by the Tea Party! Who are basically concerned with BIG GOVERNMENT ABUSE! (That includes the being overtaxed by BIG SPENDERS as well as them trampling on the rights of indivduals!)

The Democrats have been Hi-jacked by the Progressives who believe that BIG GOVERNMENT is the answer and as an aging Society/Country we should follow in the steps of our European neighbors! Who are practacing Socialist!(Albeit, they are now forced into a position where their Governments must decide for THEM! Which kind of boardlines Communism!)

Get the Picture NOW?

(You lose the (your) ability to make Changes/Choices!)

Well then:

Why do you suppose they want a Universal Healthcare Plan run by the Government? Why do they really prefer a single payer/choice program! (You know the answer - so they can control medicaid and medicare uncontested along with everyone elses plans!)
(Maybe we should insert - So they can decide if you need an abortion!)

Instead of a "Free Market" plan(s)/options driven by supply and demand! Where competition forces a balance and maintains quality!

We don't have a Free Market in healthcare today because of all of the Social Programs and Government
(Fed and State)money/regulations!

If the Government controls/owns it and runs it - It's Socialism!

------------

Maybe thats really the theme of a Credit Card Junkie - who says we can just file for Bankruptcy as a Nation in the event we can't find a way to pay for all those things we just spent all that BORROWED MONEY!

It works for Individuals, for Companies so why not Countries?

If you aren't paying attention the NEXT BIG BAILOUTS ARE THE STATES!

Just keep on Spending......

November 29, 2010 7:37 PM,

You seem to be missing the point. All of the things on that list were from the STIMULUS package. The CDC, and so on and so forth, are already being funded by our tax dollars, but were given that much ADITIONAL money by the so-called STIMULUS package. How are those things supposed to stimulate the economy? That is the goal of a STIMULUS package, right?
