Woo hoo, over here!

Whether this is a real attempt to change the commission or just an effort to get the county's attention is an interesting question. Apparently there was no effort on Ark City's part to lay ground work for this behind the scenes by talking to county commissioners. They seem genuinely surprised.

There really hasn't been any big issue where Ark Citians felt left out by the county that I can see driving this proposal. There is some concern about the condition of the Chestnut Ave. Bridge, but I can't think of anything else. I'm probably missing something.

What I hope doesn't happen is that this doesn't ignite a Winfield-Ark City rivalry. That said, the districts do seem awfully gerrymandered and three people representing such a large area does seem to stretch representation thin.

I think there has always been a concern by the County over cities encroaching (growing) into the County. Taking away farm and ranch land for developement.
I was young but remember all the
complaints about the land that was to be lost when they built the 77 four lane highway!
But, here in this area the opportunities are different than in other areas. Two towns relatively close together connected by a four lane highway.
(US 77 Business Corridor).
With an Industrial Park/Airport halfway between equally owned by both entities but loacted in the County! But, neither town can directly benefit from its growth through taxes. Only indirectly through jobs!
Unfortunately, there is no real cooperation or a real organized effort between the three when it comes to Growth!
That isn't necessarily a case of one wanting to over ride the others or interfere in their plans! Its more a case of let them grow on their own!
But, the actions of one of the three can and do have an impact on the rest!
Ex. If AC was to get a Lowes, for example, it could have an impact on businesses in both towns. The lumberyards, the household appliance/tool/electronics etc. retailers in the area!
We have infrastructure already available and undevleoped for Growth!
What we really need is cooperation between the three that produces the type of growth that builds the area through businesses and jobs that have a diversity of talent with a more broad range of incomes!
If and when it can be recognized that the competition we are facing is really with other areas. Instead of between towns and the County.
Maybe things can change!

I live outside the city limits and what the city does affects me. I have no say in the city sales tax increase, etc. I work in the city limits, shop in the AC City limits. Therefore shouldn't I get a say in the Ark City government? I think the city/county commissions should work together BUT not have city representation on the county board.

A compromise proposal here. How about we make sure that the City cops follow you and write you a few tickets. Would that make you feel more a part of the City. That's what the other non-residents get as they pass through.

Interested?

"we have infrastructure already available and undeveloped for growth".

What in the world are you talking about?! The infrastructure in Ark City has LONG been neglected so the money collected could be spent on increasing wages for the 'do nothing' city employees and the EXTREMELY overpaid dept. heads. The streets in town are in TERRIBLE shape because of mismanaged street and water depts. Street dept. that only cold patches huge chuckholes in Ks. ave, for instance, when a milling and overlay project is going to take place within just a few months!! The chuckholes have been there for YEARS. Wasting taxpayer money on the cold patch was just sham. Or look at how the water dept. has NEVER YET figured out how to properly compact the ground after installing/repairing a water service or main break, if you can't see the hundreds spots around town you can certainly feel them as you drive down ANY street in town!! How about some accountability to the 'professional' workers and managers that have let our infrastructure go to hell over the years??! PARASITES FEEDING OFF THE BODY OF THE TAXPAYERS AND WATER CUSTOMERS!!!

You may have city repesentation when you pay my city taxes...I pay both county and city and do feel that the county commissioners have always looked at proposals with eyes on the effect it would have on Winfield not on the good of the city to the south.

Neither have I but if that's going to change for one of us I would rather it be you and not me. Put you tag number on here and let's see how it works out for you.

creating 5 commission districts has the primary effect of diluting the rural/non-city dweller votes. presently the non-city votes are only divided into 3 districts. the "good ole boys" in ark city that think they are superior to us country folk just want to take over the county commission so they run the county into a financial hole like they have done to ark city. ark city is broke so lets raid the county coffers.

ark city is broke

Ark City isn't broke!

It just has a lot of money in a few pockets and a lot of Prime property under the control of a few key People!
