Smellishis ...
Here's the picture. Apparently the program spelled his character's name Smellishis Poon. It appears some older generation folks don't know what "Poon" or "Puhn." It's gutter slang for the female anatomy.

He owes the community an apology for his lack of sensitivity and using such crude language and innuendo. He was introduced as the mayor of Ark City. CASA should also apologize for not asking him to use a more appropriate costume and name. I am offended and the community that will not tolerate a "beer garden' should not tolerate this behavior from our mayor either.
There is only one fair, reasonable, and prudent thing for a newspaper editor to do in this situation. Stop all of the guessing and the after the fact statements. It doesn't look good but maybe there is more than one perspective and we just aren't seeing it. It seems too preposterous otherwise. Why not have an interview with the Mayor and ask him how this came about and what was going through his mind? Let him speak for himself on these subjects and see if there is more to the story than what we currently know or see if he will offer a public apology. One way or another that is a proper duty and role for the paper.
The man WON the pageant, so the judges obviously were not offended by his choice of costume or nick-name. My question - Who exactly judged this "contest" and did they not put it all together that night or what? Because there are quite a few people in a tizzy over this. Anybody?
I had to look up the word in the online slang dictionary, but would not have looked it up if I had not heard there was a controversy. This reminds me of high school, where the kids try to put one over on the teachers. Not everyone knows what those terms mean. Let's not lose sight that the goal here was to raise money for a good cause that involves children. CASA should not be blamed in this. Adults should be more honorable.
Kuhn's actions are a telling example of what's wrong with Arkansas City. This man doesn't care and will never care who he offends. His interpersonal skills have never advanced beyond high school. Hopefully CASA has learned that some idiots need to be protected from themselves and establish some ground rules for future fund raising events. I believe that most people are trying to improve the image of the city, but Kuhn has just taken the entire community about fifty years back. If the Traveler can print "smellishis poon" then the more accurate simple description of him is "white trash"!
Then as a christian community, people should be going to Mel with their objections or at least be willing to talk about it openly instead of this gossip milling.
I don't think it really matters how Mel dressed for this or what name he used, it would've offended someone.
Called JJ right before I wrote this out and surprise....[NOT]....NO ONE has called him yet to voice objections.
Christian community.....yeah right! Not from what Ive seen.
This is what is wrong with this town. A man is doing a skit to raise money for a good cause. These skits have been put on for a few years and all of a sudden this one offended some people. You would think the very first one would have offended the ladies of this town because of the cross dressing. So my feelings are we have a lot more inportant issues to deal with so get over it.
Everybody really needs to get over this situation. Yes he may be the mayor of this "Christian Community" LMFAO!!! But he did this to raise money for children. All I see is you guys complaining and doing nothing. I don't see you guys doing anything to help raise money for any reason. Everyone should be more worried about our economical crisis.
If this TRADITION was going to be beaten down apon you would have thought it would have happened when it first started...with the crossdressing situation. Our supposable "Christian Community" finds it ok for people to crossdress? Wow, I guess I had a different view on what a "Christian Community" was.
If you all are going to complain about something because you have no life's, then complain about the drugs in your town. The meth, weed, coke, extasy, and all of the abuse that goes on in this town. It's everywhere! Kids can't make it through high school in this town without being offered to try atleast one of these things.
Fight for something usefull people. Don't waste your time on somebody helping to raise money... Can you say "ignorant"??
C'mon folks. It's called parody. And it's for a good cause. And it's hardly offensive (since when did Puhn mean anything), and some of you need a life.
Wow, I can't believe, first of all, that they allowed that name! Come on, claiming you didn't see the connection to the vulgar meaning. Secondly, what is wrong with a white person playing the role of a black person? Isn't that called acting? As long as they didn't say racial slandering things. I wasn't there and I could be way off but it seems like there is a double standard, but I won't get into that here. It seems like this guy is not suitable to hold any public office and the fools as CASA need to be investigated and maybe do some housecleaning. Poor kids, look at their role model, and my goodness, what a mouth he has on him. Not a role model!!!
Here's the deal. I'm sure Mel could care less what anyone at the paper says or anything that is on the blogs. That is not in any way an accurate representation of what people really think because most of it just rehash by the same people who might not even really exist since they are all anonymous. The only way to truly bring change is for REAL people to approach him and express their feelings to him personally. Then he will start to get the picture that not everyone agrees with him on this.
Good point "anonymous" about everyone being anonymous on this blog, but I think "anonymous" said it better. Wait, maybe I'm thinking of "anonymous" or it could have been the comment made by "anonymous" I can't remember. I need to check what "anonymous" had to say about it first... I will have to organize my many anonymous facts and get back to you.

You all are missing the point. The CASA show is a money raising event. It is supposed to be slapstick funny. Too bad this world can't keep everyone happy!!! Get over it. Hats off to Mayor Kuhn, Linda Groth, etc.
I thought it was ironic that "anonymous" pointed out that individuals should approach our Mayor with their concerns and not complain anonymously, yet his post was anonymous. I have posted on this subject a couple of times, with my name attached, and will continue to do so. I own my words, and so should my crystal clear followers... or should we call you both anonymous?
If people don't want to be offended, then maybe they shouldn't attend a DRAG SHOW. You can't expect to patron an event like that and not see things that are a little off color. Are we forgetting that Mell did this to benefit children in our community? And if it was so offensive, why was he chosen as the winner?
Basically it boils down to this; this town is boring enough to make this into an enormous controversy. This will make most of you mad and it should; however take a minute and look at this town. There is basically nothing for our youth to do and if you have the misfortune to spend most of your life here you’ll end up blogging about a Mayor that has a sense of humor. True we are in the bible belt if you can still call it that but I don’t talk to too many residents that are terribly excited about how this effects entertainment around the area. Look at our youth; drinking and drugs are about the only excitement they can get from this area. You all will probably say I’m wrong but think of how you spent your youth unless you’re a true bible thumper. The fact that he had to apologize to the NAACP absolutely amazes me; Caucasians are the minority now and frankly I’m tired of paying for something our ancestors did in the past. If you all have cable there is a perfectly good example of this on your television. BET (Black Entertainment Television) has been on for quite some time; If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) all hell would break out. Don’t you think his apology is a little ridiculous when African Americans can say N_gger all day long in rap songs but if we even hint at saying “you people” they want to crucify someone. Wake up people; what he did was done in humor just like you see on TV every night; get over it. Last but not least for all the community bloggers; stop bitching about small things like things and wasting your life; get out and do something to make this area interesting enough you don’t have to waste your life whining on a community blog……………………
"Don’t you think his apology is a little ridiculous when African Americans can say N_gger all day long in rap songs but if "
One of the problems is that isms and prejudice want to justify bigotry by lumping all people of a particular physcial identifier into one homogenous mindset.
Perhaps you suold consider that there are AFrican Americans who find such "entertainment" offensive also. Some black folks have even synthesized an advanced vocabulary with multiple syllabic worsd strung together in the same sentence. So, mayve a huge part of the problem is that folks do not understand that none of us (humans) want to be stripped of our dignity or individual identity. As for folks who contrast with the movies such as White Chicks, I cannot offer knowledgeable argument. I did not watch it. I thought the story line to be outdated and a bit too sophmoric and simply culturally irrelevant to America today. In other words, yes there was an African AMercan who thought the story line was distasteful and likely offensive.
I have a choice not to patronize and I exercised that choice. Now, if I could simply say, let's not pay taxes during the year when the mayor lampooned dark skinned females and used vulgar language (as per his own attestation) without repurcussion, I would then call the two equal disparages of justice.
As a former public office holder, I feel the first duty of a public office holder is to represent and defend the dignity of the constituents of the jurisdiction.
So, maybe the mayor simply should have declined the invitation to participate. I believe and hope there are countless others who maintain that the standard of conduct for a public office holder is not even in the same zip code with that of a moving picture actor or other thespian.

I agree that the paper should approach Kuhn and ask him what the hell he was thinking.
But, you know he is reading this, so why no response?
This Christian community that can not tolerate a beer garden should not tolerate this. How embarrassing.
This is an outrage that our Mayor would conduct himself in this manner.
He should step down.
I couldn't agree more. What reasonable course of action is there that can be taken?
Just a thought...

Step down Mayor.

I agree he owes an apology to the community!

Does this mean the traveler is going to do a real story and ask the mayor his intentions or just get people to go on the record to complain?
Kuhn's actions are a telling example of what's wrong with Arkansas City.

outside looking in
Did no one get a video? Because this really needs to go on YouTube. You want him out? That would be the shortest distance between two points.

Heck, keep him in office. Any man who is such in touch with his feminine side that he can cross-dress for a good cause will be a good leader.

Oh well, whatever makes you all happy.
