Can Thurber get a fair trial?

The Eagle takes a close look at this looming question.

Yes he can. The fact remains Jodi Sanderholm was brutally murdered. We DO NOT KNOW all of the details as to why Mr. Thurber was arrested. Yes people talk but it does not make what they say fact.

Wasn't you just complaining a while back that the media was NOT allowed into some delibrations. Do you realize why that was? It was to protect Mr. Thurber and his right to a fair trial.

Did the Wichita Eagle discuss rather the Carr brothers would receive a fair trial many years ago? THey were tried in the county in which the murders occured. There was much media coverage back then about all of those murders. Why question the good people of Cowley County?

I do believe that jurors will mostly come from outside of Ark City. Just because you have HEARD about a crime does not mean you can not be obective.

Hopefully he will get a fair trial, so they cannot come back on appeal and get something overturned or changed.

I don't think many people know all the facts other than that Jodie was murdered and that Thurber was arrested for it. The facts of the case are known to only those very close, and even then no one knows exactly what happened except those who were there when it happened.

Let us not forget that Mr. Ney is NOT from Cowley County and he is a defense attorney. Do you really think he'd say Thurber can get a fair trial????

I am appalled to see this morning’s Wichita Eagle article on the fairness of the Justin Thurber trial set to begin jury selection on Monday. I would expect a more objective viewpoint from journalists of the area’s largest newspaper. The article consists mostly of viewpoints of people unrelated to the case. I understand that the defense, prosecutors and Judge Pringle would not have given the dramatic statements provided by those attorneys unrelated to the case. However, after reading the article what “news” are we really left with? Nothing! We have a system in place in our legal process. That system evaluated this particular case (with all the evidence) and determined that Justin Thurber could in fact get a fair trial in Cowley County. This article was nothing more than unnecessary drama added to an already dramatic situation.
Do I believe Justin Thurber is guilty of the crimes he stands accused of? Yes, I think the state will prove that he raped, sodomized and ultimately murdered my friend. The courts will show this in a fair trial in Cowley County.
So to Mr. Tim Potter and the Wichita Eagle staff:
Please remember during your reporting on this subject that there is already drama. It is simply your job to report on the facts, not search out witnesses to make for a more dramatic article (with only the objective of selling newspapers). The bottom line is the legal system has deemed a fair trial can take place. Just as Jodi’s friends and family would have needed to accept a change in venue it is time for the media to accept that there will not be one.

Why does he deserve a fair trial? What he did to Ms. Sanderholm wasn't fair!

Lets see Wichita haswhat twenty tinmes the population and not all those folks heard ABOUT IT NOR NEW THE VICTUMS OR DEFENDENTS THAT WELL to take side or even take it personally

so they cannot come back on appeal and get something overturned or changed.

All capital cases especialy when the death sentence is possible wil have appeals granted and could take up to several years before they are all exhausted

Mr. Ney is NOT from Cowley County and he is a defense attorney. Do you really think he'd say Thurber can get a fair trial????

Mr.Ney has already ask for a change in venue for just that reason he thiought it would not be a fair or was he just wasting tax payers money to hire an exspert to run a poll study for just this reason

In a small community as this is people are so close to one another by family or freinds of people of the family or by name. Ask people if they know the Dockings or the Groses or the most of any one who has a child who lived in the same neighbor hood as some one at the dance school or was at the college and watch the dance line perform in her HONOR since the horrible traggic incident happened these things mentioned here give one reasonable dought to think a fair trial is not possible. Yes some SOME people can be objective to the eveidence but to many people to close in a small community make it a long shot for justice in any case. In any small community people get branded so fast and lable for one thing or the other it just makes it that much harder for them to pay attetion to all the evidence and not the talk going aropund town. I believe the T.V. show was called Payton's Place from the sixty and now we have it here in AC in the year 2009.

Good Night (SLEEP ON THIS)
