Kudos Abrams

Steve Abrams' approach to state budget woesdoes not tow party line and is more moderate than one might expect from his campaign message and past history

See today's Traveler for his explanation on why he voted for the Senate's compromise bill

And that is why he was voted in to represent the people of the area! Glad he's doing what we elected him to do.

I bet it pains the editor to write "KUDOS" to a Republican!

If I were in to betting I would bet that it does not pain them to. It is good and refreshing to have someone demonstrating that accountability to the constituents.

And, he is willing to talk to the coters through the press. Others have treated the newspaper as if the job of the press is to be public relations and promote their agenda as well as convey their goodwill.

Talking through the press is a process that develops as the elected develops a working relationship. It takes time. It takes be willing to give a message and work with reporters until they understand the message and the meaning.

It is not always agreement and it is not always flattering. However, it really is part of the job description to communicate with constituents via mass media. When you have no local television news station, that means newspaper AND radio.

So, I imagine traveler welcomes the openness of The Honorable Mr. Abrams and will report the news as it happens. It is the suporters and advocates who have to promote his owrk and message as always positive.

Now, I beleive the issue was Abrams contribution to a compromise bill which is moderately different than whether or not the traveler is elated to acknowledge his good work.

The editor is sooooooooooooo slanted it is why I made the comment about it being hard for him to give kudos. If you look back at his post before the election it is extremely obvious that Mr. Abrams was NOT his choice.

Yes it is very nice for politicians to use the media to let the constitents know what is going on both good and bad. I believe the reason Mr. Abrams was elected was because the totally expected him to do exactly what he is doing now. Answering to the people of the area not special interest groups.

Understand your thoughts on this concerning the partisan assessment of the candidate. I still think that DAS (and JJ) do a respectable job of putting forth the news on the political scene without undeserved bias. Media should have an opinion. It is expected but they do identify opinion from the facts. We need to do the same.

Still, I think there has been an awakening by the grassroots populous in our City since they (Traveler) have married the print news to blog discussion. I would say that (beyond the people who just use this to take potshots and be mean-spirited) the comments offer an insight as to what people consider news and what will promote readership.

An informed people are an empowered people. As more meaningful discussion that occurs on here, despite the bickering, we shall become more effective at retaining solid leadership and reaping good choices and a sense of direction for southern Cowley County.

Nice comments Charles. Sometimes I agree but often I worry that these blogs will help scare off some good people from public service.
