Sidewalks rock
I think this is a great idea for north Summit. Glad to see the commission on board and pushing sidewalks for both sides of the street. That retail area was built for the car but you see people trying to walk to stores, crossing driveways and lawns with no safe path to help them. The street is surrounded by residential areas where people could walk from if sidewalks guided them. Sound also like a good opportunity to leverage funds from the state.

once again its everything for the north side. why doesnt the city start doing for the south side to. we pay our fair share of these high taxes around here. the city is just letting the south side rot. fix our sidewalks and streets. quit ignoring us down here guys!
South side has no economical commerence, there is no reason to throw money in an area with no potential for delveopment.
This area is blighted with low tax accessment in home values and realestate is virtualy worthless.
Why use up available funds fo a worthless cause
I think I would worry about spending money on one of two things: either trying to get people to come to this town or try to get the people that are here to stay. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but people are leaving in droves. There's a house for sale on darn near every block. There are some blocks with 3 or 4 houses for sale. The only people still coming to this town; Well!! I really don't speak there language so I don't know much about em!! How's that?
low tax assessment in home values and virtually worthless real estate! MY home is assessed at the lowest condition class available and it still costs a thousand plus dollars a year for taxes.
ray;
maybe you didn't live here then, but some years ago the city spent a hell of a lot of money to run a large water main to the packing house, only to have it close down not long after! It's not really a matter of where they spend, but that the OVERSPEND from a 'kitty' that we, the taxpayer, have no say so about! If you will follow the Lawson live blog, you find out a great deal about local issues. Recently I read that it was stated that the city manager, in a very short period of time, estimated the city's portion of sidewalks on the east side would be $400 thousand, I doubt that they can get it done even for that much money. I still can't see how they will be able to add a turn lane and two sidewalks that will not effect the canal bridge. Safe pedestrian traffic?, the sidewalks will have to be placed dangerously close to the edge of the road, surely not set back any where near the distance of the walks between Ks. ave to Chestnut.
Glad I know there are positive people in this community that do more than complain and put down. This blog is seriously sad...look around, every town in America has lots of homes for sale...ask the financial institutions why. People come and people go but there has been a large group of young people returning to work here and in good jobs. If you want to make a difference then get to commission meetings, run for ofice and get involved. You have to look at the overall picture and if we start by thinking of good things then good things will start to happen. Try posting something GOOD about the community.
The reason that the south side has no commercial commerce value is because of the shape that its in. All i am trying to say is, lets start to show the rest of the commuinty that the city will invest in both areas. I am doing my part as a home owner here on the south side to make it better. I am remodeling my whole house and come march, I am putting on new siding to make the nieghborhood look better. Everyone I know that owns a house down here is doing the same thing, we all just want better streets, and if the sidewalks are our responsibilty, then so be it. We would jus like the city to invest some time and effort here where it really needs it. Im not saying that the north side doesnt need it, im just saying that the south side really needs some TLC, and the streets would be a great start.
Returning to work here? and in good jobs?? What planet do you live on? Why don't you list the good jobs so that someone who has lived here for 4 decades can get one?!?
It's hard to find a $20 per hour job if you don't have any training. What kind of jobs are the people of Ark City trained for that pay that much? Don't bring up the old packing plant. Meat processing plants don't pay that anymore and they still have trouble keeping prices down. Maybe if someone had a realistic answer we could find a way to get those kind of jobs.
It's hard to find a $20 hour job even if you have the training if you are a minority caucasion
