Tax increases on the table, Part II

My editorial from last week in the Traveler about whether tax increases should be part of the balanced budget discussions in Topeka.

Blast away, my conservative friends.

I agree that no idea should be left off of the table when it comes to balancing the budget, but tax increases of any kind should always be of last resort.

Alot of tax payers already feel over taxed as it is and we already pay high taxes here in cowley county. You were right when you said that we are all tightening our belt in this economy, but it seems to me that the government, whether it be local, state, or federal, keep spending.

I know that spending is a must when you run a state, but is it to much to ask to curve the spending? We all budget ourselves when the going gets tough, and we do it with the same amount of money that most of us have made over the last few years. We don't get to raise our wage just because we need to make our bills, we cut corners and make sacrifices.

Every year, the state gets higher spending averages to adjust for inflation, thats understandible. But it seems that every year they add more programs, or more spending in places that really don't need it.

You mentioned education. If this state would open up competition between public schools and private schools, the free market would fix most of the problems with educational spending.

Private schools are much more efficient at what they do with their money than public schools are, and when you ask a parent where they would put there child, 80% or more prefer private schools. Vouchers would be the answer to a much more frugal educational option than the status quoe. It's not perfect, but it would cut spending over the long haul.

Maybe the state of Kansas has antiquated computer systems like Ark City. Maybe there is some "lost" money out there.

Well of course those of us who make an honest living with the sweat off our brows should pay higher taxes so the welfare recipients will be able to afford their blackberrys and cigarettes.

This is America after all.

Wage freezes for ALL administrative positions would be only a start, they should have to take substantial pay cuts! If they are unwilling to do so then they can leave the cushy, overpaid government employ and find work in the real world where production and accountability are required!
Another suggestion would be to reduce the work force by 50%, after all, they don't need a 'shovel leaner' for every shovel they own.

In the realm of education, how about enforcing our immigration laws, thereby reducing the number of students that require free lunches and special educators!

When I pay my property taxes this year, it will mark somewhat of a milestone; I will have paid more in taxes than what I paid for the house at purchase! I no longer even care about trying to maintain it in good condition as it only allows the city to rob me of more money! Maybe they should have a rule that EVERY employee live WITHIN the city limits so they will appreciate what it takes to pay their wages!
