Would love it!!!!!!
Pursuing a smoking ban in honor of Janet English..while a fuzzy thought- why not do it because its the right thing to do, not just because someone has died. I think it diminishes her memory and is disrespectful to say that the only reason we would pursue this is because of her memory- then its like saying she died because of it-not only untrue but doesn't seem compassionate either.
Of course, you are probably in favor of renaming every MLK designated area after Obama too. Sorry, just sounds too wagon-jumpy.
A smoking ban in honor of someone seems weird- did she die of lung cancer?
I would love it also. Smokers say it's their right, and that they have the same right to smoke as we have not to smoke, yet when we don't smoke, they don't have to smell and breath anything. I wonder if they would mind if I farted as I walked past their table at a restaurant? Farts smell much better than cigarette smoke in my opinion.
She died of cancer and her death should be acknowledged by something great. She cared about this city and served even when she was suffering from the effects of cancer treatment. This would be an awesome honor to her.
I'm curious, was Mrs. English a smoker at some point, and was smoking the cause of her cancer? Was it lung cancer that took her life?
Not only to honor Mrs. English but many others that have died from cancer.
She suffered breast cancer. But apparently one of her goals as a commissioner was to pass a smoking ban in Ark City.
I think we should think about it. I noticed several Winfield people in our fair city eating here this weekend. We don't have that many places that you can smoke at so lets get the extra revenue that Winfield is losing on the few places you can smoke at! Boost our economy!!!!
WHILE YOU MIGHT THINK THIS SOUNDS GOOD, IT SEEMS TO ME YOU ARE ATTACHING THE STIGMA OF SMOKING TO THIS FINE LADY. DOESN'T SEEM PROPER.
They should probably exempt bars and let restraunts build a smoke room with a seperate air system if they want. I think Wichita does it to where if you allow anyone under 18 in the space it has to been non-smoking. But I am for a ban in most public places.
Let's approach it like the Republican's approach any change or anything not Christian. Let's not ban smoking because we can't let Gov't tell us what is good for us and we should stone to death anybody that breaks the law (capt punishment). Jesus didn't smoke...
If my mom died of breast cancer I would not care to have that distinguished by lung cancer. Both are serious illnesses that we must work to find cures for. You are trying to muddy the waters with feel good ideas. If you want to honor Mrs. English why wouldn't you organize something raising breast cancer awareness? There is a huge need for something like that here in ArkCity. I know we have the walk, but more could be done to bring attention to this devastating illness. Now wouldn't that feel good and honor Janet? She truly was a wonderful women and to honor her would be a great idea.
Honoring anyone with an ordinance that helps reduce cancer is an honor. I doubt that Mrs. English would be offended if this community worked together to stop someone from getting cancer - and cancer. Cancer is cancer and where it attacks the body is truly irrelevant. I think her family would agree...cancer kills. Stop another family, another person from having to go through the cancer battle.
There are a couple of places in town I myself will not even go to due to the smoke. I deal with people face to face all day and when I have went to these places I come out smelling like a dirty ash tray. I think the ban would only help business in the town. Well I think it would dent the fast food business some though. I found it pretty funny that some of the heaviest smoking places in town were the only places the traveler went to for the story on the front page. How about going to some place out of the fog to get the other side of the coin?
What about the restaurant's that don't allow smoking? I don't see people huffing in Wendy's or McDonald's yet they have plenty of customers. Get over yourself smokers- it is dirty it stinks and the rest of the world is not your ashtray! Nonsmokers don't deserve to have to smell like smoke to support your rights- think about our rights too please.
