Racist undertow?

Jimmy Carter says Joe Wilson's outburst, and some of the harsher attacks on Obama, are fueled by people disdainful of a black man in the white house. Seems pretty obvious that racism is an element of the opposition, but how much is hard to say.

No one knows for sure. Probably not even Wilson himself. I do think that many people are at least a little racist, if they will admit it or even realize it I do not know. He could very well just be a right wing nut job.

It seems obvious? How so? It doesn't seem obvious to me at all.

I don't equate protesting the policies of the most liberal President in History as being racist because he happens to be half black.

I don't base my dislike for Obama's policies on the fact that he is half black, and I don't think all those protesters holding signs do either.

Now, is there a small percentage of Americans that are racist against Obama simply because he is black? Sure there is. But they are racist toward anyone not of the same color they are.

I do not equate the conservatives protesting policy with being racist, and there is no proof pointing to that either. Have you seen any racist signs at the tea parties? No. They are against the policies, not the race of the man spreading them.

I do think you liberals are doing a good job of distracting America from your horrible socialist healthcare plan by using the race card though.

Does the fact that the most prominent spokesman behind the Tea Parties calls Obama a racist, Indonesian Muslim welfare thug provide any evidence of prejudice stirring at least SOME of the protests?

Is it anymore racist than our Top Cop Wallace saying he relates to black people because he sits on porches? What is Chief Wallace trying to say with that? You notice that there are not any black police officers in Ark City either...hmmm are there any latinos or asian?

Hummm....I'm white and a republican and Obama's skin care has NEVER EVER EVER bothered me. I think its democrats saying that to cause even more division in this country. Yes there are people that are racist but of all the people I have spoken to that don't like obama its his POLICIES not his race they dislike. But of course our dear liberal editor blindly follows what the democrats say. WHy don't you learn to think for yourself. GEEZ.

on the other hand in my lifetime I have seen political disagreement in congress without it mimicking the unruly disorderly protests that are flashed on the screen from the turbulent middle east.

Civility in congress is to be the inviolable norm. Why would any US citizen want our congressional representatives to denigrate to outbursts, shouting and name calling.

I think the acceptance of such behavior is only tolerated, or in some circles welcomed, because his target was a black man.

In any other instance an elected official ranting in an official public session on national tv would simply be considered an embarrassment. At best they may have said it was something like a diabetic condition that clouded his judgment.

I anticipate that the behavior of certain congressional persons will further decline as a way of showing their "superior sophistication".

It's 21st century version of using the n word when you are losing the battle. anything to change the agenda people. Wilson's conduct was low rent. typical irony that the person who felt he was showing up the president only made a spectacle of himself.

let's just pray that others do not imitate his inappropriate and adolescent behavior.

So if the "you lie" outburst is racism then you must also say that what Kanye West did to Taylor Swift is also racism.....right????

I saw a black police officer awhile back, several times.

Oh please! Quit playing the racism card everytime that someone doesn't agree with the new President. I mean, isn't this the new status quo? Play the race card because Americans are against socialism and the funding of illegal immigrants? Give me a break already. Call it what it is and what it is- is a guy who is sick of being lied to by the President. He said "You lie" when the President said that nationalized healthcare would not benefit illegal immigrants- and guess what folks? He was and is continuing to lie about that. It does benefit them. You can google many different sources and hospitals around the nation right now that are going bankrupt because of illegal immigrants who pay nothing. You people are stoning a man who is standing up for the rights of US citizens. When is the big white elephant in the room supposed to be addressed? After they pass free health care to every illegal immigrant that jumps the fence? By then it will be too late and taxpayers will be strapped with that fee too. Please, quit playing the race card whenever people are simply standing up for the rights of Americans- you're uneducated rantings and propelling of race is what has got us into this mess. It's way overplayed already. It was used to win the Presidency and it is constantly used when someone disagrees with him.

Jimmy Carter is out of touch with reality- plain & simple.

Unfortunate....I am sure Joe was just emotional....if you are like me about medicare age...the health care reform bill has a lot to be angry about...illegal immigrants should they be covered? Children born in this country by illegal immigrants? Medicare age people who have paid all their lives and then suddenly they do not count anymore because they have expensive illnesses.... Racism I think not...Former President Jimmy Carter owes the nation an apology in my opinion!

First, Whatever his name is, he was out of order and I think it was pretty obvious that the African American woman whose name he purported to defend was as equally embarrassed. The fact that his was a racially motivated rant does not dismiss the Wilson debacle. It was so out of line and I really hope that we are not applauding such unruly and disorderly conduct by our congressional representatives.

The other post who argued that health care providers are going bacnkrupt now UNDERSCORES that any proposed policy by the President (Recall there is no plicy to come forth yet) has nothing to do with current problems and your assertion adds impetus to why something must be done.

It's wild how we mix circumstances such as hollywood versus politics or blur timelines such as blaming possible future policy for an existing healthcare crisis.

Putting it in chronological order would then force one to perhaps consider that the dilemma of healthcare should have been addressed maybe five years ago or ten years ago.

No wait, how could we blame Obama for that. Then I beleive it was a general indictment against a do nothing congress. It's double talk but that is all we get with partisan politics now.

And the non-responsiveness to the needs of American citizens is because American citizens have become pseudo experts at the political blame game themselves. We don't care if it ever gets fixed so long as we can 1) argue about it and 2) blame someone that we don't like for the problem.

It's our fault. The actor or singers behavior is our fault because we tolerate it and make it profitable by watching the show, watchign the newscasts that keep replaying the scene and some even go to his movies.

The healthcare is our fault because we simply won't tolerate anything different and congressional folks keep getting re-elceted (even Tiarht) without doing one thing about it. And yes, I voted for him. No, I don't know what the performer you guys are spoiling about even does.

Race card = smokescreen

A feeble attempt to draw attention away from the fiasco that is Obama's healthcare bill.

Was it a racist comment when Obama immediately sided with the Harvard professor, say the cops acted stupidly? What about when Pelosi called the CIA liars? No hint of racism there, but certainly a publicized 'outburst' to the national audience, or her recent statements about the tea party protesters in Wash. DC, relating it to violence in the past, or when she cautioned those in the media holding different views from hers, and how they could be responsible for inciting violent actions from 'crazys'?

Is it racism or a form of slavery when they defend the right of illegal aliens on the basis of cheap labor? Our government, whether republican or democrat, have chosen to keep the border open for some reason?!

I will agree that the printed news media in this country leans heavily to the left, when all opinion polls I've seen reflect a negative count for the current issues, but the majority of printed articles are pro-admin. and reform.

So according to former President Carter and let me get this right, If I disagree with President Obama’s policies or proposals and I am white then I am a racist? Then conversely if you are Black and disagree with a white President’s policies or proposals then you must be a racist? So all of the Blacks that disagreed with President Carter’s policies or proposals were racist? Then this means that Jessie Jackson is a racist.
