School dazed

Some people are raising a stink about Obama making an address about the importance of education to school children. With the birthers and communist conspiracy theories out there, it does seem a noticeable sliver of the American public has broken from reasonable society and lost any sense of diplomacy. I suppose these are the folks who circulated the Obama is a Muslim and baby killer lies during the campaign. They were chastened by defeat, but now are full throated since the shine has worn off the new President.

David;I think that it is more than just a sliver of upset people in the country over some of these statements comming out of the govt. It is plain to see that we have forgotten our history and are bound to repeat it. Some would have us be afraid of everything and the govt. will protect us. Now we are going to allow govt. policies to be indoctrinated into our children by way of a mandated broadcast that all must see. If you can't see this you are as blind as some of the other sheep in this country. First you start with the children, then the adults and soon you are able to convince everyone that they can't make decicions for themselves. After that everyone who doesn't agree with you is no longer there. Be careful what you wish for you just might get what you want. The last time this happened it cost 6 million lives......

Ok, I may not know all the details here, but what is wrong addressing our children about the importance of education, hard work and being responsible? How is that pushing government policies that is going to ruin the United States? I can't think of anyone better then the President to convince the youth an importance of education.

I guess I don't understand what the big deal is about this. I think it will be great for him to talk to students, on their level and explain, just how rough things are out there. Help them understand what their parents are going through. How they are struggling. We can't protect our kids forever and maybe it will help them become better adults. It doesn't matter to me if it is the President now or president from the past. I think they will listen to him....if they haven't been tainted by their parents.

Our education system would be just fine if we weren't pushed to the limits with illegal immigrants. They require special staff, they get free education and it strains the entire system. As taxpayers we should have the right to choose to not fund illegal immigrants education. After all, they aren't paying anything for us.

Ahhhhh...that's where the argument of "indoctrination" is based. The President was going to ask students to supply feedback on how they can get involved. I scoured the entire address and materials put out by the DOE and could not figure out where the outrage was coming from. Is this also where people are getting the idea that he will be asking "personal questions" to students that are inappropriate?

I thought this was funny...Dems accuse Bush 1 of paid political ads during national school speech.

Funny how they both just want/wanted to speak about the importance of education and opponents fly/flew off the handle.

Yeah, Obama might say something really subversive like "Stay in school. Study hard. Do your homework. go to college. Give back to your country...

We can't have our young people exposed to that.

Give me a break.

The guy can't win.

No one has touched on the real controversy, which was the way the original lecture/ speech was worded to have the children write ways they could help Obama. Not help their country, not help their community, but help Obama. That was the reason for the initial cries of indoctrination.

The White House has since changed the wording of the writing project.

Imagine if JFK had said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for ME!"

I am just wondering how all these people "know" that this was not the original speech that was to be given. If they know so much, how come they aren't helping run the country?

Oh the shine has worn off all right- but not for those who didn't vote for him. The shine is wearing off for those of you that voted for him for the wrong reasons. Of course no one wants to admit it, but we all know its true. No true American can be proud of a situation where we as a people are apologized for, because we are Americans. Its also very difficult to watch our consitution twisted and the basis of our country destroyed. I don't have a problem with the President sending a message of encouragement and expectations of the next generation. I do have a problem with apoligizing for being American. And, unlike Ms. Obama- I don't think America has to change- (well, we didn't before they came into office- we'll need to put it back right in a few years) I am proud to be American and don't need their "change"- I had more before they came into office- and it only looks to get worse. But I've got an idea- go ahead and keep letting illegal immigrants in while you continue to export jobs and give money to businesses 'too big to fail'.

In my day it was a good thing for the President to address the nation's children- and an honor. There is something very powerful about a strong respected authority figure telling children to do their best and that they are a part of something greater. It gives them self worth and a sense that they really are part of the country's future and may even help them go down the right path. Why does that intimidate so many?
