Go Mell

As regular viewers of this blog know, I'm no Mell Kuhn fan. But on his commitment to stricter code enforcement and holding property owners accountable, I say "Go Mell." This is one area where his outspokenness I think is needed to set a tone for higher standards of appearance. Wish all elected officials would follow suit.

You won't see his comments in the link above because they come toward the end of the story. Just check your Traveler for that day.

The city already has set 'a higher standard of appearance' as evident by all of the brand new pickups they keep in their fleet!! One act that shows their complete irresponsibility in handling taxpayers money! Fix your property up so that they can charge you MORE taxes on it, that is the only motivation behind them!

LOOKS AREN'T FUNCTIONAL!!!

Somehow I miss your point on Commissioner Kuhn's being outspoken and any commitment he might have. Kuhn originally ran to prevent the city from passing a law about people parking on their front lawn. He has delayed and impeded action to clean up along the river and improve with a hike bike trail. On top of it all, has anyone looked at the business property southwest of the bypass and Kansas Avenue? Somehow the words and actions don't seem to fit.

If Commissioner Kuhn wanted to make serious improvements he would start first with properties belonging to fellow Commissioner Smith. Then follow up with other business partners such as Bill Sheldon.

But then, maybe any commissioner can take credit for any change?

Aren't journalists suppose to be neutral ? Don't you make yourself irrelevant by stating your feelings & bias ?

I moved here from Denver back in march of 08'. I bought a property on the south end of town and the first thing I noticed were these nasty brick streets. Then I noticed how all of the businesses were up north. It seems to me that the city commision has just decided to leave the south end of town to fend for itself. Every chance the city gets to raise taxes and spend money they take it, the only thing is that they don't spend the tax money on things that they are supposed to spend it on. Things like the sidewalks, city streets that actually need paving, gutters, and updated electrical systems so we dont lose power every time we get half an inch of snow.

I left Denver because it was getting to liberal to raise my kids in and the taxes were way to high. I come here and the taxes are just as high and we only get half of the bang for our tax buck! Maybe we should all get together and vote these clowns out of office when we get a chance.

If the city wants this town to look better, it needs to start on the south side with the streets and sidewalks that they are responsible for and maybe people will feel better about investing in there homes a little more. The city needs to show that it cares about the whole city instead of just the north side.

And please don't give me that crap about "the brick streets are historical, we can't pave over them." Thats a load of crap.

You moved here to get away from Liberals and high taxes???

Man, I bet you wish you'd done some more research before committing to the move.

I want to get out of this town for the same reasons.

Don't like the brick streets then you do have some choices but asking the city to pave them is probably not the most cost effective or practical way for us to get the most bang out of our tax dollars.

I doubt that this town could be considered liberal in the scope of most American towns. We are what we are.

Aren't we (the property owners) responsible for our sidewalks? I wouldn't mind letting the city pay for it, but it has been my responsibility for many years and I don't see it changing. Do the people on the south side have different rules than the rest of us, or is it just another opportunity to put their hand out? I'm sure they got a great deal on the home because of its location and condition. Whose responsibility is it to bring up the value? Maybe you would like for the city to paint and fix your roof too? Will you make us all pitch in for it?

I find it unfortunate that Commissioner Kuhn cannot accept possible alternatives for possible better quality and to save money. It makes for a very nice double standard. When the top to the sewer treatment tank needed to be replaced it went out for bid, but instead of replacing it, Mr. Commissioner sold the city on repairing it (without approval of the commission). Now he takes the opportunity to make certain that other possibilities are eliminated? If that is "Go Mell" then please take him away.

In the real world ITs the city that keeps roads and other infrastructure intact. Asking the city to improve the roads by paving them is not to much to ask. no Im not asking the city to raise the value of my home, but when the city ignores the upkeep of its responsibility, it does drive down the value of evrything around it. As far as putting our hand for a hand out goes, no one is aking for that. the home owners on the south side would just like the city to put a little more effort into keeping the ENTIRE city nice. We all pay our taxes here and it would be nice if we could see our tax dollors at work somewhere else besides the north side. As far as improving my home, I do all of that on my own dime, but if you want to "pitch in", feel free.
