Questionable judgement

Seems like the judicial candidates are using an over abundance of caution in declining to attend forums. Seems like the public should get more credit for understanding that they might not be able to answer certain questions due to the need to stay neutral as a judge.

As one reader said recently, this district court judge position probably has more influence and power over the lives of Cowley County citizens than any other elected position because of the power to make direct decisions over their freedom and property.

Why could not they NOT attend a forum to give their background but can answer questions for the Winfield Courier???? They were given questions in advance and no debate was actually going to happen. Everyone single one of them just lost my vote of confidence.

Wait....they are lawyers so they look to find the loop holes when it fits them.

They are all good people. They made a choice, and the fact that they all stood together is a good thing.
Picking a judge should not be done in an open canidate forum with all the other canidates being there answering questions about other offices.
A judge and the election of a judge should be respected and they should have their own forum. Almost all have given their cell phone numbers so if you feel compelled to ask a question call them.

There should be a forum & who ever has the guts to show up gets my vote !

But how do we get a feel of their personality? How do we a feel for if they will be impartial??? This is a BIG deal.

I'm with anonymous @8:10.....they will answer written questions to the courier but not written questions to newscow. Sounds like they want to pick and choose who they deal with.

"Picking a judge should not be done in an open canidate (sic) forum with all the other canidates (sic) being there answering questions about other offices"

Judges are elected officials, no better than any other elected official. There is no reason why the candidates could not attend the forum. Yes there may have been questions that they could not respond to under the law, but they could still speak about their experience in the judicial system.

I find it very troubling that the candidates will not step up, it appears to be more back room good ol'boy politics that has plagued Ark City for decades....

At least they aren't slinging mud at one another, and instead running on their experience. I think it's great that they all got together and agreed not to debate in an open forum. You can learn about their backgrounds and experience through their various websites.

What do they have to hide?

They aren't hiding anything. It's not like a normal election. Judges are held to different campaigning rules. Getting together and saying so was a smart thing to do.
