Local races

I think we have a good crop of candidates for county commission and for judge. The GOP primary will decide the next county commissioner. I think it's a hard choice, all of them are qualified and all have pretty similar ideas about county government, it seems. Guess experience might be the deciding factor.

In the District Court judge's race, all are attorneys with solid reputations. Chris Smith probably has the best name recognition as county prosecutor, but really all of them are pretty well known. Watch LaDonna Lanning as the sleeper in this race. I would guess she is the least well known but with five candidates, she could slip through. I know of several women who like the idea of a woman on the bench.

I heard from several sources that one of the county commission candidates went out of his way to sabotage part of the fund raiser car show for the Burford this spring. If he's that petty I can't consider him a "good" candidate. You might ask all of the candidates if they have/would support civic projects in Ark City and see if everyone tells the truth.

I imagine your "several sources" go by screen names naysayer, BS, and news1.

I heard one of the candidates wears dresses and another of the candidates eats children.

In other news, there was a fund raiser car show at the Burford this spring. Who knew?

I think Lanning has a real shot at it. I like that she has pulled herself up by her bootstraps and made it where she is by her own hard work. She is getting this family's votes. And I'm not a woman, but I still think having a woman in the seat could be a welcome change.

Hi,
Thanks for the free publicity. So the rumor is I went out of my way to sabotage the Burford fund raiser car show. So here is my side of the story:
Tiny came in to my shop to ask if I would be in favor of closing Summit Street to allow the car show. I said I WAS NOT in favor of this, especially on a Saturday, which is my busiest day. We have limited parking on Summit St. and felt it would harm our business. There was one other Summit street business against it also. However, after the city commission approved the fund raiser, I contacted Gary Wilson to bring in two of his cars to help support the very cause in question. He parked these two cars in front of Double Eagle and Land Rush Leather.
If you have any other questions please give me a call on my cell at 660-2525 to discuss it further. Thank you and please remember to get out and vote.

Is it respectable for Chris Smith to change party affiliation just because he knows he would not beat Krusor on the Democrat ticket? So does this make Smith a fake Republican? What are the publics thoughts on this issue?

I will not vote for Smith because of his party change. He is a RINO because is helps him politically. No other reason. Also, he needed help in prosecuting any cases he didn't plea bargain. Thurber was a slam dunk case yet he was second chair. Why is that?

I think there are several reasons behind Chris Smith's changing, but primarily he has seen the writing on the wall. The Democrats path is not to his liking. The long term goals and freedoms believed in by republicans are more fitting for his style and personality as he progresses

What; ‘Travelers political endorsements’ I’m not from here, so I find it odd and disturbing that a small town newspaper would take sides in an election. ‘Give them the nod’ please, the great and powerful has cast is blessing, how pathetic. You live in the same little town, so print the unbiased news, your opinion is not news, but it is a big contributor to the fact that your paper is failing.

PS “All politics are local” All considering; rather strange quote comming from you, or you don’t know its meaning?

I think we ought to ask Green to run for city commission if he does not win the county job. At least he does not want to raise another sales tax.

They both have slung so much mud that I will now vote for Anderson. I met him at the fair and he actually has some really good ideas.

Looks like Ed Trimmer is going to have a tough time now having to run agaist a write in canidate named Larry Alley. Mr. Alley has some tremendous ideas about developing Strother Field. Like the fact there is already an EPA certified paint building there. The is railroad access, landing strip access, and Interstate commerce via the highway. He indicated that Strother could literally become a cargo shipping mecca for Wichita with our runways, and if we extended them it is limitless. Mr Alley currently works at Spirit Aerosystems launching new businesses internationally. He could be a very valuable resource.

One more thing the Strother Field commission the County Commission and both cities need to address is the fact that Strother Field looks "run down." There are weeds growing everywhere, the sign looks like the late 1960's and overall the experience when it is visited is a view of neglect. Let's make it look more like Hutchinson, McPherson, Dodge City or Garden City.

I thought the people voted and decided on the sales taxes? I didn't know the city commission could do that!

The Commission can not vote in a sales tax increase but they can get it on the ballot for the tax payer approval.
