Tiahrt v. Moran

Coverage from the Eagle here. Immigration and security sounds like topics that dominated the debate. I was glad to hear, actually that Tiahrt supported in-state tuition for immigrants and even driver's licenses for illegal aliens (Don't think this is a good idea, but liked that he was on the side of trying to assimilate them) but of course today, when running in a GOP primary, Tiahrt can't have those positions so he's changed his mind.

It's funny that each is exposing the other's more moderate, or less conservative positions in their pitched battle to appear the most conservative. Tiahrt is highlighting Moran's vote against Bush tax cuts, and his opposition to military tribunals in certain cases. Moran, probably rightly, says they violated the U.S. constitution. But right now that's the last thing he wants voters to know .....

anyone voting to give rights to ILLEGAL immigrants loses my vote. Others have come to this country the right way so can others.

Tiahrt's immigration voting record:

It seems he was all for it except when he was against it.

Some highlights:
*He Co-sponsored a bill to reward illegal aliens with in-state tuition rates and amnesty in 2003-2004,
*voted in favor of rewarding illegal aliens from Mexico with Social Security benefits in 2004. *voted against the Sullivan Amendment to H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.
* Cosponsored bill to reward illegal aliens with in-state tuition rates and amnesty in 2001-2002
*Voted FOR Section 245(i), a form of amnesty for illegal aliens in 2002
*Opposed mandatory workplace verification programs in 1996

In short, he has flip flopped a LOT on immigration.

Here is Moran's voting record on Immigration:

Moran is much more consistant on his stance against illegal immigration, although there are some areas where he voted for immigrant labor (But not ILLEGAL immigrant labor). Tiahrt is trying to act as though he is more conservative because he knows that is what the voters want, but I believe Moran is the true conservative in this race. And his voting record speaks to that.

On those Numbers USA links I posted above, notice that Tiahrt's name is listed in BLACK, while Moran's is listed in GREEN. Here is the distinction:

"Members in BLACK (Tiahrt) have broadly mixed records of voting for both higher AND lower immigration."

"Members in GREEN (Moran) have records of strong support for lower immigration and a more stabilized U.S. population and laborforce."

If Immigration is an important issue to you, Moran is your guy. Who knows when Tiahrt will change his mind again.

I heard Tiahrt on the radio this morning saying that he lived in Kansas, but in the next breath saying he moved his family to Washington to be with them. You can't have it both ways. Then he went on to say that Moran is basically making his wife be a single mother by having them stay in Kansas while he is in Washington during the week and coming back to Kansas every weekend. Then he brought up his son's death for his excuse for living in Washington, which to me, is just horrible. I hope people do their homework in voting, and not just vote for who Sarah Palin tells them to.
