Bad law, good outcome?

It seems clear to me that the new Arizona immigration law is flagrantly unconstitutional. You can't arrest somebody based on how they look, and the law opens the door to police persecution. Many law enforcement leaders think it's out of hand.

Here in Ark City, you here suspicion of Hispanics just based on appearances. People see somebody who doesn't speak the language and might look particularly "Mexican" or "Hispanic" and they assume they are illegal. Or they hear Spanish being spoken and make that assumption. It's fear of difference and "other" and that somehow our existing culture will be harmed. It's called Xenaphobia. I'm not saying there aren't illegal immigrants in Ark City and Cowley County, but some folks jump to conclusions.

But ....

In the end, what if this bad law leads to some real immigration reform at the federal level because it's brought the issue to a head.

Seems reform is plenty overdue - Bush tried it three or four years ago. The stupid "amnesty" rhetoric gummed things up and scared the GOP because they hate to look compassionate or reasonable when it comes to illegal immigrants. But Bush, McCain and some others were right on on this issue. It seems like what

It is a proven fact that illegal immigrants cause crime rates to rise. People should be worried about illegals coming to their cities. As far as the unconstitutional part. I can see it if they are American citizens, but lets face it illegals have no constitutional rights. They are not American citizens. Our constitution is not for everyone in the world or people who cross our borders illegally. Futhermore, i think it is good that Arizona has taken a stand on this issue, it's about time somebody did.

They don't arrest them b/c they look illegal. They can ask for documentation. Then arrest them.

Would you oppose the law if it was, for instance, imposed in a Canadian border state (such as Washington, Montana, etc), and there illegal Canadians crossing the border.

I once heard that Mexico had most of its Military protecting its Southern Border!
They were there to prevent the invasion/migration of the poor from those corrupt Central and South American countries!
While we let them overwhelm us at our own borders!
Who is the fool in this Picture!

Typical liberal BS.

First of all, You have obviously not read the law. You should refrain from writing about it until you have a grasp of it. You are assuming that the law allows police to stop anyone who looks hispanic, because that is what you heard on MSNBC. IT DOESN'T! It says that if a person is already contacted by police for a lawful reason, and the police have reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally, they may ask for their identification to find out. As the law stands here in Kansas, if a police officer stops you for a lawful reason, they can ask you for your identification (ie: your driver's license). There is nothing "flagrantly unconstitutional" about that, now is there?

Second, your "comprehensive Immigration Reform" is nothing short of Amnesty, and the American people do not want it. Not without a real attempt to close the pourus border first. It seems that every 20 or 30 years, we end up giving amnesty to the 15 to 20 million illegals who have snuck in since the last time we granted amnesty. THIS IS NOT A DETERRENT! Close the borders, and THEN we can talk about giving the ones who are here (and are not criminals, and can speak english) a path to citizenship. Even then, it is vastly unfair to the millions of immigrants doing it right and waiting in line to come to America the legal way.

We know how bad you Democrats need votes in November, but this is not going to work.

Morons!!! This negative reaction to this law has nothing to do with stopping illegals. It is about US Citizens being stopped because they are hispanic.

Moron?? read the law. It doesn't let cops stop people for just looking hispanic. It's funny when people call names and act like they know everything, only to find out that they don't know what they are talking about.

Nope....he gets his liberal news from politico. It surely can't be wrong!

When you think of a serial killer, statistics show that 9 out of 10 are well educated white males, therefore when there is a serial killer on the loose, you start with that profile. It just so happens to be that 9 out of 10 illegal imigrants are mexican or of some kind of hispanic origin, therefore when looking for an illegal immigrant, you start with the given statistical profile. Is there room for asbuse in the arizona law? perhaps some, but any law is subject to flaws depending on the the one enforcing it. there is no law that is perfect, but I agree with SG, its about time someone is doing something about the problem. The federal government is doing nothing so the states are left up to defend our borders themselves. In that law it states that the CITIZENS of Arizona can sue the state if they do not enforce the law, I wish we could do that to our federal government. And for those who will defend the opposition to the law, please state a better way to find immigrants who come here illegaly. I'm sure we can all agree that the word illegal means against the law, so why is it a bad thing to punish the law breakers. Or is this another one of those "just because they do it, it must be ok" type of arguements?

For those who would rather KNOW what the law says instead of speculating:

"Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik refuses to enforce state's new 'racist' immigration law"

Then he should be removed from office for letting politics (he is an open borders democrat) stand in the way of him doing his job. He took an oath to uphold the laws of the state and should resign if he no longer wishes to do so. If he does not resign, he should be removed from office. Hopefully the people of his county will start the process of having him removed. Over 70% of Arizona citizens approve of the new law.

Your an awful journalist David. Shouldn't you be using the press as a way to get facts out there instead of pushing you and your parties agenda. You are always the first one to complain about Fox news, now here you go. People are already aware that mexicans can not be pulled over for looking mexican. However when questioning the bank robber for you know, Robbing the bank. They are allowed to see PAPERS. OOH such a harsh word. I will say it again PAPERS!! OOH! I will show mine and guess what I may have a little latin in me.

SG, Suck it up! The November election is not going to go the way "you all" think it is. Yes there be a few voted out, but the numbers will be small, cause only liberals will take the time to go vote.

1:45,

YOU WISH!

From the polling data and the primary results, it looks like democrats are staying home. I predict a huge shift in power come November, and I can't wait!!!
